Our Values

Our Environment

We’re still in the early stages of our sustainability journey, but we believe every small step counts!

Our food vendors use recyclable or compostable packaging, and many accept jar returns for honey, preserves, and beauty products. Egg cartons are always welcome for reuse, and one of our regular stallholders even specializes in pre-loved books.

Our Borrow Bag system is going strong—grab a free bag if you forget yours or drop off any extras at home. Look for the big blue bucket near the produce area.

Our Future

We’re committed to growing our sustainability efforts. In the future, we hope to introduce reusable cutlery, cups, and plates as part of a community project. We’re also exploring ways to further reduce waste and support local food resilience. Stay tuned as we continue to evolve!

Our Community

We work with many different community organisations and business incubators to create a support network for our market vendors, but also the wider kai economy in Murihiku.  Our annual Spring planting event with Healthy Families Invercargill is always a hit.

We support product validation and testing for Young Enterprise Students through our relationship with Southland Business Chamber, help new food producers through our Kickstart program with Coin South, and often have fundraising groups join the market.  We are a very active member of the Murihiku Kai Collective, contributing to the creation of the Feeding Murihiku Good Food Roadmap and long term food access and resilience projects in our region.  This is where our work in encouraging and supporting new growers, producers and access to local, fresh produce and seasonal vegetables will really have an impact on our community.
